I dyed my hair too dark!!!!!!!!?

Okay SO, I had natural dark/golden brown hair. I wanted to go lighter, so i put highlights in. When i did that i didnt like it. so i wanted to go back brown. so i bought this dark hairdye thinking it was taking me back to a dark brown, but it actually turned out like ugly and black and sh*tty looking. I was wondering how i go WAY lighter? Like how much would it cost in a salon to go back lighter, or would it be cheaper to just cut it all off? Im so aggravated!
